Ghost Screen Concept

What it is

• A fake ball screen that manipulates switching rules by threatening contact, then slipping into space before the defense can settle.

Why it matters

• Switching 1-5 on defense became the dominant NBA approach over the past 10 years, peaked with D'Antoni's Rockets vs. the Warriors in the 2018 WCF.
• Offenses had to evolve to attack switching — the ghost screen is one primary answer.

How it works

• A player runs toward a screener as if to use the screen but ghosts (runs past) the screen without making contact.
• The offensive player's defender will often switch or get caught in the action.
• The screener (big) is now matched up against a smaller guard who switched.

Reads and counters

• The ghost screener reads his own defender: if that big is poised to switch or blitz, ghost early and slip behind the vacated coverage.
• The ball handler reads the slip lane: if the on-ball defender bumps up expecting a screen, attack the gap created when no real pick arrives.
• The ghosting screener (often a shooter) reads where his man goes: if the big sinks or hedges out, pop to the arc for the catch-and-shoot.
• Against a hard switch, read the resulting mismatch: feed the slipping screener into space or attack the slower big now stranded on the ball.
• The passer reads two outlets at once: the popping ghost screener relocating to the perimeter and the driving ball handler attacking the unset coverage.
