Iverson Cut

What it is

• An Iverson cut is a cut from one wing to the other across the free-throw line area, usually using one or two high screens.

Why it matters

• It moves a scorer before the catch and forces the defender through traffic.
• It can create a clean wing catch, a backdoor reject, or a switch to attack.
• It gives the offense a repeatable entry that still has multiple reads.

How it works

• Cutter sprints across the high screens.
• Screeners make contact or force the defender to choose a route.
• Passer delivers the ball as the cutter clears the final screen.
• The cutter catches ready to shoot, drive, pass, or enter the next action.

Reads and counters

• If the defender trails, catch and attack.
• If the defender top-locks, reject backdoor.
• If the defense switches, find the mismatch.
• If help comes early, hit the open spacer.
• If the defender goes under, stop behind the screen.

Teaching cues

• Cut shoulder-to-shoulder off the screeners.
• Show hands late so the defender cannot time the pass.
• Catch with feet organized for the next decision.
