What it is
- On-ball defense is the defense of the ball handler.
Why it matters
- The defender should position their body in a stance that allows them to react laterally (guarding the sideline or the middle, depending on the situation).
- Going "over" the screen (running around the top of the screen) is preferred because it keeps the defender between the ball handler and the basket.
How it works
- The goal is to deny them easy scoring opportunities while controlling where they attack.
- Positioning: The on-ball defender should be close enough to contest shots and passes but not so close that a quick crossover or feint gets them off-balance.
- Typically, 1-2 feet from the ball handler is optimal.
- The defender's hands are active—one hand up to contest shots, the other arm active for steal attempts—but not reaching or fouling.
- Pressure and Direction: Modern on-ball defense attempts to "pressure" the ball handler into uncomfortable directions.
