What it is
- Post defense is among the most technically demanding individual defensive skills because the post player's threat is immediate, physical, and near the basket.
How it works
- Because the defender has their back to the basket, they cannot recover on an over-the-top lob.
- The defender positions themselves between the post player and the ball, facing the ball, with their back against the post player's chest.
- This completely eliminates the direct post entry pass — the passer cannot throw the ball through the defender to the post player.
- Vulnerability: The lob pass over the top. Because the defender has their back to the basket, they cannot recover on an over-the-top lob.
- When to use: When the post player is dominant and the team can commit a weak-side helper to protect the lob.
