Reading Hedge or Show Coverage

What it is

• Hedge or show coverage is a defensive strategy where the screening defender steps out to pressure the ball handler briefly, then recovers to the roller.

Why it matters

• The key principle is attacking the hesitation: if a defender hedges, the space they vacated is open; attacking that space forces the defense to reset.
• Many pick-and-roll turnovers occur because handlers don't recognize hedge coverage and attack the right space.

How it works

• This is designed to disrupt the pick-and-roll and force the handler off the screen or into a secondary option.
• Against hedge/show, the handler has two primary reads: (1) if the screener is open after the hedging defender commits, split the defense or make a quick pass to the open screener; (2) if the hedging defender recovers too quickly, attack the space that opened.
• The handler must decide in a split second: pass or attack.
• A hesitation (dead dribble) can give the handler time to read whether the hedging defender is committing fully or preparing to recover.

Reads and counters

• Read the big's hips: a hard hedge sideways and high kills your pull-up, so hit the rolling or slipping screener into the 4-on-3.
• If the big only shows soft and flat-hedges, snake your dribble back across his top foot and turn the corner before he recovers.
• Watch your defender chasing over: if he trails late, the gap behind him and the recovering big is your pull-up or split lane.
• If a low defender tags your roller, the help came off a shooter, so whip the skip pass to the now-open corner or weak-side wing.
• On a hard hedge, attack the big's outside shoulder to retreat-dribble and re-screen rather than picking up your dribble into the show.
