What it is
- Modern offensive analytics have identified three zones that generate disproportionately high expected value: the restricted area (at-rim), the corner three-pointer, and the above-the-break three-pointer.
Why it matters
- The restricted area includes all shots within 5 feet of the basket directly in front of the rim or from the baseline.
- Corner threes are located in the corners approximately 22 feet from the basket (slightly closer than above-break threes, which are roughly 23-24 feet).
- Any shot generated outside these zones without a significant efficiency advantage represents value leakage.
How it works
- The mid-range shot (15-22 feet, not at the three-point line) has been devalued in modern basketball due to its poor efficiency-to-spacing tradeoff.
- A mid-range two-pointer made at 50% is worth 1.0 points per attempt (0.50 × 2 points); a three-pointer requires only about 33% shooting to match that, since 0.33 × 3 ≈ 1.0 points per attempt as well.
- Elite shot-makers sometimes generate additional value through rhythm mid-range shots against overplaying defenses, but this assumes specialist-level shooting ability.
- For most players, mid-range shot frequency should remain below 10% of total attempts, reserved for specific tactical moments rather than primary scoring options.
- Open shots (defender more than 3-4 feet away with hand not in the shooting lane) convert at approximately 5-8% higher rates than contested shots across all shot types.
