Transition Defense Communication

What it is

• Transition defense requires rapid, loud, specific communication because it unfolds faster than any other phase of the game.

How it works

• It should be shouted at maximum volume.
• Meaning: An urgent call for all teammates to sprint back toward the basket immediately.
• When called: The moment a shot is taken or a turnover is committed — by any player who processes the situation first.
• Urgency: This is not a reminder — it is an emergency call. It should be shouted at maximum volume.
• Meaning: The nearest player to the ball handler must engage and slow the transition — do not let them go.

Reads and counters

• The first player to read shot or turnover yells "Back!" and sprints; the deepest defender reads numbers and calls "I've got ball."
• The deepest defender reads the count: if outnumbered, protect the rim and the basket-cut first, then build the wall back-to-front as help arrives.
• Sprinting defenders read who is already matched and communicate "I've got next" to take the most dangerous open man, usually the trailing shooter or rim runner.
• Read the outlet: if the rebounder advances the ball, the nearest defender calls "ball" and pressures the inbounder or outlet to delay the push.
