Transition Defense

What it is

• Transition defense begins the moment possession changes.

How it works

• The sprint back mentality is the cultural principle that every player, regardless of position, immediately sprints back toward their basket to establish defensive position.
• This mentality is fundamental to preventing easy baskets in transition.
• Players who are not sprinting back (jogging, walking, recovering at half-speed) are often still far from the basket when the offense reaches the three-point line, forcing the defense into disadvantageous matchups.
• A team with a strong sprint-back mentality often converts potential three-on-two or two-on-one breaks into situations where the defense is at least level (three-on-three) by the time the offense reaches the perimeter.
• The sprint back must be sustained for the entire transition; sprinting 20 feet and then jogging defeats the purpose.

Reads and counters

• If you are goalside of the ball, stop it; if it slips behind you, sprint back to protect the rim.
• On a numbers disadvantage, the bottom defender reads the deepest threat and protects the basket while the top defender stalls the ball.
• Read the trailing pass: if the rim is loaded, peel off your man to wall the paint, then match up out as numbers even.
• Identify your matchup by area, not by name; take the nearest dangerous man and sort assignments once the ball is stopped.
• If you are the closest man to the ball handler, force him to a sideline or make him pick up his dribble before help arrives.
