Why it matters

• It is the single unifying principle behind denial, help, and gap defense; every off-ball coverage is a point along the ball-you-man line.
• Seeing ball and man simultaneously lets a defender help on penetration AND recover to their man — the core trade-off of team defense.
• Losing vision of either the ball or the man is the root cause of most backdoor cuts and uncontested drives.

How it works

• The defender positions on the imaginary line between the ball and their man, pulled off it toward the ball by a distance set by how many passes away the man is.
• One hand points at the ball, one hand points at the man (the "pistols"), keeping both in peripheral vision — see ball, see man.
• The triangle flattens (defender steps toward the line, denying) as the man gets closer to the ball, and widens toward the help position (the nail/gaps) as the man gets farther away.
• One pass away: ball-side, in a denial or close gap; two passes away: in true help, well off the man toward the lane.

Reads and counters

• One pass away, your man can catch and score — deny and flatten to the line; two passes away, sag to true help.
• Read your man's eyes and hips, not just the ball — if he cuts behind you backdoor, open up and stay on the ball-you-man line.
• If the ball is dribbled toward you, slide up the line to jump the gap; if it moves away, drop deeper toward the lane.
• When your man sets a screen or relocates, re-find the triangle immediately rather than ball-watching and losing the see-ball-see-man frame.
• On a skip pass over the top, close out under control to the new ball-you-man line, hand high on the shooting side.
