What it is
- The responsibility of the weak-side low defender (the "low man" or "I") to rotate to the rim and stop a ball-handler who has beaten the on-ball defender, while teammates X-out and rotate up to cover the abandoned shooters.
Why it matters
- It is the last line of help: once the ball gets to the paint, the low man is the defender standing between the drive and a layup.
- Correct low-man rotation turns a broken possession into a contested shot or a kicked-out (longer, lower-value) three instead of a dunk.
- It is the trigger that sets the entire weak-side rotation (X-out, full rotation) in motion (see Full Rotation Concept).
How it works
- On the drive, the low man slides across to the front of the rim ("be the I" — straight up under the basket) to contest vertically at the rim (a charge only if legally established outside the restricted area).
- This vacates the weak-side corner/help man, so the next defender up (the high weak-side defender) rotates DOWN to the low man's man, and the top defender rotates to the high man — an "X-out" rotation up and across.
- Defenders rotate to the next-most-dangerous man, not back to their own, scrambling and matching up afterward.
Reads and counters
- The low man reads the ball-handler beating the on-ball defender; if the driver clears the gap, abandon your man and sprint to the front of the rim.
- Read whether the drive is blown or contained: if your on-ball teammate recovers chest-to-chest, stunt and snap back rather than fully committing.
- Read your distance from the restricted-area arc; if you can set feet outside it before the drive arrives, take the charge, otherwise verticalize.
- The next defender up reads the low man leaving and rotates down to cover the now-open roller or dunker-spot man.
- The top defender reads the chain reaction and X-outs up to the most dangerous perimeter shooter, not back to his original man.
