What it is
- It is the defensive counter to one of the most-run NBA/college actions.
Why it matters
- Spain PnR attacks the drop big twice: the back screen springs the roller to the rim while the back-screener (a shooter) pops for a three, so a defense that only solves the ball screen still gets beaten.
- Without a plan, the back screen forces the rolling big's defender to fight through traffic, leaving an open lob or an open pop — the action manufactures two simultaneous advantages.
- It closes a glaring asymmetry: the offensive Spain action is heavily covered, but the defensive response is what wins possessions against it.
How it works
- Switch the back screen: the back-screener's defender switches onto the roller, and the roller's original defender takes the popping back-screener — the cleanest answer if the defenders are switchable in size.
- Tag the screener's screener ("X" / peel): the low/weak-side defender tags the roller momentarily so the roller's defender can recover from the back screen
- Top-lock the back-screener: the defender guarding the back-screener plays above (on the high side) to deny him from getting into the back-screen angle, blowing up the timing of the stack.
- Three-switch: switch all three actions (ball screen and back screen) so every defender simply takes the nearest man, trading effort for mismatches.
Reads and counters
- On-ball defender chases over the screen; the big plays base coverage and feels the shooter's back screen as he tracks the roller.
- Roller's defender reads the back screen early: if he survives it, stay on the roll; if screened off, switch and take the popping shooter.
- Low tag-man bumps the roller down the lane, buying the recovering big time to reach the rim or close to the popped shooter.
- If the back-screener can't shoot, sag off the pop and play it like a normal ball screen rather than over-helping the stack.
- A slipped or ghosted back screen means the shooter leaks early to the arc; stay home on the roll and close out to him.
