Defending Dribble Handoffs (DHO Defense)

What it is

• The set of coverages a defense uses to guard a dribble handoff — top-locking the receiver, switching the exchange, blitzing/hedging the new ball-handler, or treating it like a ball screen

Why it matters

• The dribble handoff is a primary initiator in modern motion and Spread/Chicago-action offenses; if it goes uncontested it produces downhill drives and instant advantage.
• A DHO is functionally a moving ball screen, so the same decision tree as pick-and-roll coverage applies but with a live exchange of the ball.
• Pre-determined handoff coverage removes the indecision (two defenders chasing one cutter) that DHOs are designed to create.

How it works

• Top lock: the receiver's defender jumps above (ball-side of) the receiver to deny the catch entirely, forcing a backdoor cut or a reset instead of a clean handoff.
• Switch the handoff: the two defenders simply trade men as the ball changes hands — clean if there is no size mismatch, a common answer when matchups allow.
• Blitz/hard hedge: both defenders pressure the new ball-handler after the catch to force a pickup or a pass out.
• Play it like a ball screen: the giver's defender slides into a drop or hedge while the receiver's defender chases over the top, treating the DHO as a screen-the-ball action.
• Go under: the receiver's defender goes under the giver/screen — acceptable only against a non-shooter receiving the ball.

Reads and counters

• Read the receiver's shooting threat: top-lock a knockdown shooter to deny the catch, but go under against a non-shooter and meet him at the next action.
• Read the giver after the exchange: if his defender is in drop and the receiver turns the corner, the chasing defender must beat the handoff over the top or concede the downhill drive.
• Read for the keep: handoff guards often fake the give and dribble it themselves, so the receiver's defender must stay attached until the ball actually changes hands.
• Read the angle of the handoff: a flat, wide DHO lets you switch cleanly, while a tight, descending handoff into a roll is best blitzed or hard-hedged to kill momentum.
• Read the screener's slip or ghost: if the giver pops out instead of handing off, the hedging big must recover early rather than chase a phantom screen.
