DHO-Heavy Offenses

What it is

• DHO (dribble-handoff) offenses are built around frequent dribble-handoffs between guards and wings, creating quick shifts in ball-handling responsibility and spacing.

Why it matters

• Advantage: High touch-rate for multiple players, spreading creation across multiple archetypes.

How it works

• A Secondary Ball Handler can be involved in every other possession via DHOs.
• Disadvantage: Slow pace (handoffs take time).
• Risk of turnover if the handoff is poor.
• Archetype Fit: Primary Ball Handler + multiple Secondary Ball Handlers or Off-Screen Shooters.

Reads and counters

• The receiver reads his man: if the defender trails or goes under, turn the corner downhill; if he top-locks, reject and backdoor.
• On a hard hedge or show from the screener's big, the handoff man reads the short roll and keeps the dribble alive to attack 4-on-3 behind it.
• Against a switch on the DHO, immediately attack the new defender before help sets or hunt the post mismatch the exchange created.
• The dribbler reads the receiver's hips: if the defender goes under, fake the handoff and keep it as a drive; if chased over, pitch and screen.
• If the help defender tags hard from the weak side, the handoff man sprays to the spaced shooter in that corner.
