What it is
- Together they are the spacing engine behind every drive-and-kick and motion offense.
Why it matters
- A drive collapses the defense; drift, lift, and fill ensure the driver always has three relocated, ready shooters instead of stationary teammates standing where help can guard two at once.
- These reactions stretch the help defenders' closeout distances, turning one penetration into an open catch-and-shoot or a second-side advantage.
- It extends Basket Cut and Fill by defining where perimeter teammates relocate during the drive (rather than after a basket cut), giving the offense a shared off-ball vocabulary.
How it works
- Drift: the player in the corner on the side the ball is driving away from (or the strong-side corner as the drive goes baseline) slides farther along the baseline, away from the driver's defender's help position…
- Lift: the player on the wing or slot above the drive lifts up toward the top/wing, climbing into the driver's vision and out of the help defender's reach for a swing pass.
- Fill: a player from the weak side or the slot fills the space behind the drive (the "drag" or relocation spot) so a kickback pass is available if the driver is cut off.
- The driver reads which defender helps and passes to the relocated teammate that help vacated; the relocators must move on the drive, not after it, to beat the rotation.
Reads and counters
- If the low man (corner defender's help) tags the roll/drive: the corner drifter is open for the kickout.
- If the nail/help defender steps to the ball: the lifting wing is the swing read.
- If the driver is cut off without help committing: kick back to the fill man behind the drive and re-attack.
Teaching cues
- Teach "move on the drive, not the pass" — relocation has to start as the ball goes by, or the closeout recovers in time.
- Drift away from the driver's help-side, not toward it, so the kickout angle stays clean.
- The lift man must climb to game speed and be ready to 0.5 on the catch (shoot, drive, or swing).
