How it works
- Sprinting to the screen location is essential; a slow arrival allows the defense to anticipate and adjust.
- The timing must be coordinated with the ball handler: too early, and the handler isn't ready to attack; too late, and the defense has set.
- Most pick-and-roll systems use nonverbal communication (hand signals, eye contact) to coordinate timing.
- The best screeners are constantly moving and ready to set screens on short notice.
- A screener who hesitates or positions slowly is ineffective regardless of their physical tools.
Reads and counters
- As the screener you read your own defender's coverage on contact: if he drops, roll hard to the rim; if he hedges or blitzes, slip or short-roll into the gap.
- Read the on-ball defender's path over the screen and angle the pick to wall him off, then re-screen if he ducks under instead of chasing.
- Against a switch, read the size of the mismatch and seal early, posting the smaller defender before help digs from the weak side.
- On the roll, read the low-man tagging you: if he steps up, dive through to occupy him so the corner shooter is freed, then look for the lob or dump-off.
- Read the handler's eyes and dribble; slip early when the defense pre-rotates to trap so you punish two-on-the-ball with a 4-on-3.
