PRESS BREAK

What it is

• The most widely used and most effective press break alignment.

How it works

• Width forces the press to cover the entire court.
• Receiver immediately squares up to face the pressure — never catch and turn away from the defense
• Middle man cuts to the ball to receive the second pass — two-pass sequence beats most presses
• Width is everything: every player at the sideline extended, making the press cover maximum horizontal distance
• The most important non-ball-handling player in press break.

Reads and counters

• Inbounder reads the first trap: if the ball-side defender cheats to the corner, hit the middle release man stepping toward the ball.
• Ball handler who catches reads the nearest two defenders — if both commit to trap, pass ahead before they close, never dribble into the seam.
• The middle man reads coverage: flash to the ball when the wing is denied, but slip behind the front line if defenders jump the entry pass.
• Once the ball reaches the middle, read numbers up the floor — if you have the advantage, push hard and attack the back two defenders 2-on-1 or 3-on-2.
• Against a tilted zone press, read the weak-side sideline: the long diagonal skip beats the rotation and gets you behind the press.
