Timing and Reading Defense on Inbounds

What it is

• Even in structured plays, timing matters.

How it works

• The inbound passer must read the defense.
• If the initial target is tightly covered, the passer should look for the second option (typically a screener rolling or a weak-side cutter).
• The cutter must read the defender's reaction to the screen.
• If the defense goes with the screen (following the cutter), the screener is open.
• If the defense stays with the original player, that player has space.
