DHO From Off-Ball Screener

What it is

• Setup: Stationary or Movement Shooter receives DHO from handler, then scores off the handoff.

Why it matters

• Shooter attacks or spaces Visual: Surprising because shooter is getting ball in attacking position, not catch-and-shoot.

How it works

• Mechanics: Handler dribbles toward off-ball shooter (usually positioned in corner or wing)
• Mechanics: Shooter moves to meet handler (or handler drives to them)
• Mechanics: Handler passes via DHO
• Mechanics: Shooter now has ball in space with original defender (usually POA guard)
• Mechanics: Shooter attacks or spaces

Reads and counters

• Handler reads the shooter's defender: if he trails the cut, hand it off tight so the shooter turns the corner; if he jumps the handoff, keep it and attack the vacated space.
• Shooter reads the big on the handler: a soft drop means catch-and-rip downhill, a hard show means refuse the handoff and reject backdoor.
• Handler reads switch timing: if defenders switch the handoff late, give the ball to the shooter to attack the slower big before help sets.
• Shooter reads his catch: feet set and defender chasing equals rise into the three, defender even equals one dribble pull-up or all the way to the rim.

Teaching cues

• Hand it off tight, rub him off
• Turn the corner, don't catch and hold
• Refuse it, back-cut
• Set your feet, rise up
• Keep it, they're trapping
