DHO as a PnR Variant

What it is

• The receiver's defender must navigate the handoff like a screen.

Why it matters

• DHOs are prevalent in modern offenses (Horns, Floppy, Princeton, Dribble-Drive Motion) because they create spacing and multiple coverage options.

Reads and counters

• The dribbler reads the receiver's defender: if trailed over the top, hand it off tight and turn into a screen on the roll.
• If the receiver's man goes under or ducks the handoff, fake the give, keep it, and attack downhill off the dribble.
• The receiver reads the handoff man's defender: a drop lets him curl into the paint, a hedge or blitz means reject and flare.
• The handoff man reads his own defender: roll hard if the big drops, slip to the rim if both defenders blitz.
• If defenders switch the handoff, the receiver attacks the new matchup immediately before help loads, or replays the action with a rescreen.

Teaching cues

• Hand it off tight and turn and screen
• Curl it if the big sits back
• Reject and go if they ice it
• Slip the handoff on the blitz
• Hunt the switch, attack the mismatch
