Press Break Formations

What it is

• Effective press break formations place the ball in the hands of the best ball handler and create passing lanes.

Why it matters

• This creates multiple outlets and passing options.

How it works

• The most common formations are: 1-4 Flat: One player (typically the inbound receiver or an outlet) is isolated higher up the court.
• Four other players form a line at the mid-court or lower.
• The one player becomes a primary ball handler.
• As the inbound pass is made, the four-player line spreads out, creating spacing and passing lanes.
• The ball handler dribbles to the nearest opening and passes to the first open player in the line.

Reads and counters

• The inbounder reads the trap: if both defenders jump the first catch, hit the vacated middle player for a 4-on-3 downhill.
• The first receiver reads the sideline trap and dribbles away from it, never into the corner where two lines become extra defenders.
• The middle player reads which way the ball reverses and flashes ball-side to split the two top defenders before they re-set.
• Once the ball crosses half court, the handler reads numbers ahead and attacks 3-on-2 or 2-on-1 immediately, never pulling it out.
• If the inbound pass is denied, the receiver back-cuts long and the inbounder hits the rim-runner over the top.
