The 2-3 Zone

What it is

• The most widely used zone at every level.

How it works

• High Post / Elbow: Both top guards must react but often arrive late — a skilled elbow player can hit cutters, attack the lane, or shoot the mid-range
• Short Corner / Baseline: Dead zone between corner and block — wing defender caught between both
• Corner Three: Skip pass forces the opposite bottom defender to cover 20+ feet in under a second
• Flash to the Middle: Diagonal cut from weak-side low to the middle splits both layers
• Ball Reversal Speed: If the offense moves the ball faster than the zone shifts, gaps appear everywhere

Reads and counters

• Top guard reads the ball: ballside guard pressures it while the other guard sinks to protect the nail and high post.
• On a pass to the wing, the ballside top guard closes out high-handed and the bottom forward preps to jump the corner.
• On a pass to the corner, ballside forward takes it, center drops to cover the block, weakside forward rotates across to the rim.
• When a cutter flashes to the high post, the center bumps up to meet it or the guards pinch, never letting it catch and turn.
• Read the skip in the air; the weakside loads early and sinks so the long closeout arrives on the catch, not late.
