5-Out Entry Series: Delay

What it is

• "Delay" is the second most common 5-Out entry.

How it works

• The ball is passed to the trailing big in the middle of the floor (the "trail" position near the top of the key).
• From there the big reads the floor and chooses which side to enter.
• Definition: Chicago refers specifically to a DHO for a player who first comes off a pindown screen before receiving the handoff.
• Action: Ball passed to trail big near the foul line
• Action: A wing player runs off a pindown screen set by a corner player

Reads and counters

• The trail big at the top reads which side has the better matchup or earliest cutter and enters away from the loaded help.
• On Chicago action the wing curls if the pindown defender chases over the top, and fades if he goes under or cheats the handoff.
• The handoff receiver reads the big's hip and his defender, attacking downhill when the defender trails and snaking back when ICE'd.
• If both wings are denied at the catch, the big keeps the dribble alive and re-enters to the opposite side or attacks the closeout himself.
• After the DHO the big reads his own defender's coverage to roll to the rim against drop or slip-and-pop against a hedge or switch.
