Furman 5-Out Offense

What it is

• Philosophy: 5-Out Drive & Space combined with Princeton-style off-ball cutting.

How it works

• Pistol 5 Entry ("Pistol 5" / "Elbow"): Ball to the wing, pass ahead to the elbow/mid-wing
• Pistol 5 Entry ("Pistol 5" / "Elbow"): Off the catch: split cuts, post-up reads, off-ball cutting actions
• Pistol 5 Entry ("Pistol 5" / "Elbow"): Most common action: pindown screen for the corner shooter
• Delay: Bring the ball up in 5-Out, pass to the trail man
• Delay: Quick reversal into a pindown in the middle of the floor

Reads and counters

• On Pistol 5 the cutter reads the on-ball defender: if he top-locks the wing, go backdoor; if he trails, curl off the pindown.
• The pindown screener reads the shooter's man: a chaser means curl tight, a defender going under means pop back to catch-and-shoot.
• On the Delay reversal the trail reads help: a closing defender invites the drive, a sat-back defender invites the next middle pindown.
• On Barkley's back screen the cutter times his baseline run; if his man top-locks, slip ball-side to the rim before help rotates.
• Off the catch read the rim: drive the open lane, swing if a low man stunts, or feed the post seal with inside position.

Teaching cues

• Space it, every gap stays a pass away.
• Read the topside, backdoor when they deny.
• Curl tight or pop back, read your man.
• Spray to the corner on the kick.
• Cut hard off Barkley's, time the back screen.
