5-Out Offense: Foundation

What it is

• The modern spacing shell: five players outside the arc to open the paint, stretch help, and turn every drive into a read.

Why it matters

• Forces defenses to guard all five players on the perimeter
• Creates driving lanes through spacing
• Makes switching defenses vulnerable to mismatches and ghost/flat screens
• Maximizes the value of 3-point shooting relative to mid-range

How it works

• Corner-Corner-Wing-Wing-Top — the standard 5-out spacing
• No player is camped in the paint unless they are a roll man mid-action
• The big man (5) must be comfortable as a ball handler and/or screener at the perimeter
• When any player drives, the four others rotate into vacated spots ("fill" rules)
• DHO (Dribble Handoff): Ball handler dribbles to a stationary player, hands off; screener rolls or pops

Reads and counters

• The driver reads his closest helper: if the low man stunts in to wall the rim, kick to that man's abandoned shooter; if help stays home, finish.
• Read the on-ball defender's stance — if he plays you to drive, attack the closeout shoulder; if he sits back, rise into the open three.
• On a DHO, read the handoff defender's coverage: if he goes under, the receiver shoots; if he chases over, turn the corner and attack downhill.
• Off a pindown, the cutter reads his own defender: curl if he trails over the top, fade if he jumps the catch, backdoor if he top-locks to deny.
• The fifth player reads vacated spots and fills: behind a baseline drive lift to the corner, behind a middle drive replace up top to keep the kick-out alive.

Teaching cues

• Drive a gap, draw two, spray it
• Fill the spot, don't watch the drive
• Drift to the corner on baseline drives
• Read the closeout — drive long, shoot short
• Empty paint, cut it backdoor
