Read-and-React Offense

What it is

• Why Layer 4 is a major escalation: Now every pass-and-cut sequence creates a two-person action — the cut itself and the screen away.
• If the cutter is open — pass them the ball for the layup.
• It establishes the fundamental discipline of the system — you never stand still after passing. This alone generates 20–30% more shot opportunities than static offense.

Why it matters

• It is the most systematically organized of all modern offenses — designed not as a set of plays but as a progressive layer system where each layer is taught independently and stacked on top of the previous.
• The foundational premise: Every player's action is determined by what the player with the ball does.
• There is no "next action" called by a coach.

How it works

• Rule: Any time you pass the ball, you cut to the basket immediately.
• If the cutter is open — pass them the ball for the layup
• If the cutter is covered — the cutter continues through and fills a perimeter spot
• Rule: When the ball-handler dribbles toward you, you must cut backdoor — you do not stay and receive a handoff.

Reads and counters

• The genius of R&R's progressive layer system: - Players build muscle memory for reads, not plays.
• Players build muscle memory for reads, not plays. A play must be remembered. A read is habitual.
• Every player learns the same rules. There is no position-specific knowledge. A point guard has the same reads as a center. This makes substitutions seamless.
• Reads compound. After learning all five layers, a player can process multiple reads simultaneously without conscious thought — the way a driver processes traffic.
• Defense cannot disguise itself. The cutter reads the defender's body position, not the play call. The defense cannot fake the cutter out by showing one coverage.
