Actions That Create Out of 5-Out

What it is

• DHO (Dribble Handoff): Ball handler dribbles to a stationary player, hands off; screener rolls or pops

How it works

• Pindown: Off-ball screen for a player cutting toward the ball; used to free up shooters
• Ballscreen: Standard pick-and-roll with the 5 setting for the 1
• Cut: Backdoor, basket, or Iverson cuts triggered by ball movement
• Stagger: Two sequential pindown screens for one shooter

Reads and counters

• On a DHO the handoff receiver reads the on-ball defender: if trailed over the top, turn the corner downhill; if the defender goes under, rise into the catch-and-shoot.
• The dribbler reads the receiver's defender on the keep-or-give: if that defender jumps the handoff early, fake the give and keep it downhill for a layup.
• On a 5-out ball screen with the 5, the handler reads the big's coverage and snakes back to the middle versus drop, or hits the roller short versus a hard hedge or blitz.
• On pindowns and staggers the cutter reads the chaser: curl if trailed over, backcut to the rim if top-locked, fade to the corner if the defender goes under.
• Every action reads the empty paint of 5-out: if the low defender stunts to help, the passer sprays to the vacated corner or skips weakside for the kick-three.
